How to Store a Mattress and Box Spring

A hand lifting a mattress off of a bed frameWhen you think about it, we spend about one-third of our lives sleeping. Over time, repeatedly sleeping on a damaged mattress can cause a whole slew of negative side effects. From back pain to obesity to a weakened immune system, the importance of getting quality sleep can’t be overstated.

The Importance of Properly Storing a Box Spring

A mattress is built to lie flat on a bed. So, when is the mattress not in its intended position and therefore has a greater chance of becoming damaged? When it is being moved. Unfortunately, even the newest mattress can be damaged by not being moved properly. To prevent your mattress from becoming damaged during a move, follow these tips when moving and storing a mattress and box spring. Check out what you need for your move.

The Best Tips for Storing a Mattress and Box Spring

  1. Clean the Mattress and Box Spring: It is important to never store an item that is dirty. This is also true for a mattress, because storing a mattress that is dirty can result in the formation of mold or mildew while it is in storage. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dirt or pet hair. Once the mattress is vacuumed, use an upholstery cleaner to clean the mattress.
  2. Lay the Mattress and Box Spring Flat in Storage: The structure and coils of the mattress were intended to lie horizontal. While it’s okay to move a mattress on its side, it is important to only store it horizontal. Overtime, storing a mattress on its side can result in damage to the coils or structure of the mattress.
  3. Use a Mattress Cover: Use a mattress cover to protect your mattress and box spring while they are in storage and being moved. Secure the mattress cover to the mattress using tape.
  4. Never Store Anything on Top of the Mattress: While it may be tempting to take advantage of the extra space by storing items on top of your mattress, this can result in damage to your mattress. Overtime, the weight of an item on your mattress can result in the coils becoming damaged or warped. To conserve space, the mattress can be stored on top of the box spring.
  5. Never Store Your Mattress or Box Spring in a Damp Location: If your mattress and box spring become exposed to moisture, it can result in the formation of mold or mildew. Take care to only store your mattress and box spring in a dry location.
  6. Check Up on Your Mattress and Box Spring: It would be a mistake to place your mattress and box spring into location and not check up on them. The earlier you are able to catch any potential threats to your mattress, the better.
