Easy Tips for Motorcycle Storage

Is there anything better than the feeling of cruising the open road? When you own a motorcycle, there’s a sense of freedom that comes from going for a ride. However, motorcycle riding is often at the mercy of the weather. If you’re looking to store your motorcycle to keep it safe during late fall and winter months, it can be challenging to know what steps to take.

If you’d like to learn more about motorcycle storage, you’re in the right place. Join us as we share helpful tips on how to store your motorcycle. That way, if you ever want to hit the open road again, your motorcycle will be ready for the journey.

5 Motorcycle Storage Tips to Follow

1. Empty the Gas Tank

The first thing you’ll want to do before putting your motorcycle in storage is empty the gas tank. Leaving gas in a bike often causes corrosion and damage to the fuel system. To empty the gas, just disconnect the fuel line from the petcock and let the gas empty itself into a fuel can. Now that the tank is empty, start your motorcycle and let it run to get rid of any remaining fuel. If taking out the gas isn’t an option for you, look into adding a fuel stabilizer and be sure to run your bike once in a while to help prevent corrosion.

2. Have Fresh Oil in the Engine

Whereas you empty your bike of gasoline, you need to ensure your motorcycle has fresh oil in the engine before putting it in storage. Even though your motorcycle won’t be running in storage, fresh oil helps ensure the parts inside your engine are well lubricated, so they don’t cause damage to one another. Oil that isn’t fresh is filled with contaminants that can corrode the internal parts of your engine. With that in mind, it’s also important to change your oil once you take your motorcycle out of storage.

3. Disconnect the Battery

When you’re prepping your motorcycle for storage, you have a few options when it comes to your battery. If you plan to store your bike for a few months, it’s worth looking into a battery tender. A battery tender will monitor your battery and recharge it once the device notices it has started to lose power. If you’re anticipating that your motorcycle will be in storage longer than that, you can disconnect the battery altogether.

4. Wash and Deep Clean Your Bike

Before you put a motorcycle in storage, it’s important to give it a deep clean. Wash your bike, polish all the surfaces, and make sure you get all the dirt and grime off the frame. The more dirt you have on your bike, the bigger risk there is for rust to develop. To give your efforts an added boost, contact your bike’s manufacturer and ask which products they recommend for cleaning.

5. Cover Your Bike When It’s in Storage

Before you leave your motorcycle in storage, make sure it’s covered. This can help protect your bike from changes in temperature and the accumulation of dust. You’ll also want to plug any holes, such as the exhaust, with a towel to prevent debris or even rodents from getting inside your bike. If you want even more protection from the elements, try renting a self storage unit designed to store motorcycles.
