Appliances: Washer and Dryer Storage and Moving Tips

A washer and dryer ready for storage.

At some point in your life, there will probably be a time where you have to move your washer and dryer. Due to the weight and fragility of these appliances, it should be done carefully. While there are many reasons you may be choosing to move your washer and dryer, one may be because you intend on storing it for later use. To help with these situations, we put together some washer and dryer moving and storage tips.

The Top Tips for Moving a Washer and Dryer

  1. Clean the Washer: This tip is especially important if you intend on storing your washer. A week before you plan on moving the washer and dryer, run a solution of vinegar through the rinse cycle. This will help to clear out any detergent that is stuck inside.
  2. Remove Lint from Dryer: Take the time to remove any lint or leftover debris from your last load of wash.
  3. Disconnect the Water and Gas Hose: Turn the hot and cold water valves off and then disconnect the water hose. Repeat the same actions with the gas hose. If you do not have experience with disconnecting the hose from the gas line, contact a professional for help.
  4. Allow Washer to Air Dry: To prevent mold and mildew from forming, allow the washer and dryer to fully air dry.
  5. Wrap the Appliances for Protection: Tape the doors to the washer and dryer shut to avoid them from swinging open during the move. Wrap the washer and dryer in a heavy material to prevent scratches from occurring.
  6. Move the Appliances with a Dolly: Washer and dryers are very heavy and will not be able to be moved by simply lifting them. To avoid dropping or damaging the washer and dryer, use a dolly to move them.

How to Store a Washer and Dryer

  1. Keep the Doors of the Appliances Open: Never store your washer or dryer with the doors open. Moisture can become trapped inside and result in mold or mildew forming inside.
  2. Use a Protective Cover: To keep dust or dirt from settling on your washer and dryer, cover them with a heavy blanket or tarp.
